The vegetative stage is where we lay the foundation for healthy plants that are ready for flowering. Mastering the vegetative stage of cannabis growth requires understanding the key aspects of this phase, from how much and how often to water/feed to how much nutrients to use. Automation and precise control over environmental conditions can significantly optimize plant growth, leading to bigger plants and better results.
Understanding the Vegetative Stage
The vegetative stage follows the seedling phase in the cannabis growth cycle and precedes the flowering phase. During this stage, cannabis plants focus on building a strong root system and developing a robust main stem and fan leaves. The growth rate in this stage is crucial as it sets the stage for how well the plant will flower. Indoor growers and outdoor growers alike aim for optimal growth during this period to ensure their cannabis plants have the proper structure and health to support the flowering stage.
The Role of Automation in Cannabis Cultivation
Automation in cannabis cultivation is not just a good idea; it's becoming a necessity for cannabis growers aiming for top-tier quality and efficiency. Total control over the grow space, from light cycles, temperature, humidity and VPD ensures that your plants receive the most important factors for growth precisely when they need them.
Light Management
Automated systems allow for precise control over the amount of light and the light schedule. Cannabis seedlings require a different light cycle compared to young plants in the veg stage. For example, during the first week of the seedling phase I run the light 24/7. Once we move into week two and the vegetative stage I move to an 18/6 light cycle. Using automated systems to manage light intensity and hours of light eliminates the risk of human error, ensuring your plant receives the right conditions for its stage of growth.
Climate Control
Environmental conditions such as relative humidity, temperature, and air circulation play a significant role in the growth of cannabis plants. Controlled environments in an indoor grow room or grow tent can be achieved through automation. Systems can adjust the heat or cold temperatures, maintain optimal relative humidity, and ensure enough airflow to mimic the best natural conditions. This level of control prevents issues like heat stress or slow growth due to unfavorable conditions.
Watering and Nutrients
Cannabis plants don't just need much water; they require the right amount at the right time. Over or under-watering can lead to root problems and slow the growth rate. One way for new growers to determine when to water is to pick up the pot when it's wet. When its fully wet, it will be heavy. As it dries out, it'll get lighter and lighter. This is a good way to determine when to feed. If the leaves start to droop, your waiting too long.
Setting the Stage
In the vegetative stage of cannabis growth, paying close attention to the needs of your cannabis plants sets the stage for a flourishing flowering phase. The right conditions, combined with the precision and efficiency of automation, can lead to robust plant growth and impressive final yields. As a new grower, using automation and data collecting early on will help you in future grows and sets the foundation for bountiful harvests. I generally veg my plants for about 5 weeks. This gives me plenty of time to correct any deficiencies and it also gives me time to top the plants at least twice. We'll discuss topping more in depth as it needs its own article.
