How to Perfectly Germinate Cannabis Seeds
Germinating marijuana seeds is the foundational first step for both new growers and seasoned home growers alike. Among the different germination methods available, the paper towel method stands out as the best way, especially for beginner growers. It's simple, effective, and sets the stage for the development of healthy marijuana plants. Let's dive into this process, which uses everyday items like a paper towel, a plate, and a lizard tank heater to achieve the right conditions for your cannabis seedlings.
Why the Paper Towel Method?
The paper towel method is lauded as one of the best methods for germinating weed seeds due to its simplicity and effectiveness. It allows for precise control over environmental conditions such as moisture and warmth, crucial for the germination process.
Supplies Needed
- Marijuana seeds
- Paper towels - the cheaper the better
- Two-three plates
- Lizard tank heater (for maintaining warm temperatures)
- Spray bottle with tap water
- Tweezers
Step-by-Step Germination Guide
Step 1: Set the temperature on the heater
I set the heater to 83 degrees and then stick the thermometer to the plate. There will be some heat loss but this is about the perfect temp. Place the first small plate directly on the heat mat.
Step 2: Cut the Paper Towels
The second thing you need to do is cut the towel into a circle so that fits perfectly on the plate. I like to take a marker and trace a circle around the very edge of the plate face, where the side begins to slope up. I then cut a perfect circle and make sure that it fits perfectly on the plate. I then take that circle and place it on another paper towel. I then cut another circle using the previous circle pattern, but just slightly larger. I then take the smaller of the two circles and place it on the plate. If I am germinating more than one strain, I take the marker and draw a partition and then label each side. I then take the spray bottle and moisten the towel on the plate.
Step 3: Prepare the Seeds
Place your marijuana seeds on the damp paper towel on the plate. Leave enough space between each seed to allow for growth.
Step 4: Create a Dark and Warm Place
Take the second paper towel circle and gently place it on the seeds. Next, use the spray bottle to moisten the paper towel. You want it nice and damp but not too wet. Lastly, cover the bottom plate with the second plate, creating a dark place that mimics the natural underground environment.
Step 5: Monitor the Germination Process
Give the seeds 24 hours before you remove the plate. Check to make sure the towel is still damp. The key is to maintain enough moisture without letting the seeds sit in excess water. The warm place provided by the lizard tank heater will accelerate the germination process. Most seeds will take 48-72 hours to pop and show a taproot.
Step 6: Prepare your medium
24 hours before you transfer your seeds you should prepare your medium. We like to use 6 inch starter pots. Once these have been prepared and put into the tent mix up a bucket of water with calmag. I usually go with 10 ml in a 5 gallon bucket. Then take this mixture and water the starter pots until runoff. When you transfer the seeds, you want them to be just a little damp.
Step 7: Watch for the Tap Root
After a few days, you'll notice the seed shell cracking and a small tap root emerging. This is the first sign of a germinated seed transitioning into the seedling stage.

Step 8: Transplanting to Growing Medium
Once the tap root is about a quarter-inch long, carefully transplant the germinated seed using your tweezers into your chosen growing medium. I usually transfer the seeds once the majority has popped a taproot. I'll take any seeds that haven't popped yet and place them about a quarter inch below the surface. Generally these seeds just need a little more time and occasionally you get a few duds. It's a bummer but it's just nature.
Post-Germination Care
- Lighting: Once transplanted, your young seedling will need light. I like to run my light 24/7 for the first week and then move to 18/6 for the rest of the veg period.
- Temperature and Moisture: Continue to provide a warm environment and ensure your grow medium has enough moisture but is not waterlogged. In a day or two you will start seeing the seedlings pop thru the medium and begin their journey.
- Next Step – Vegetative Stage: As the seedlings develop their first set of leaves, they will enter the vegetative stage, gradually requiring more light and nutrients.
Using the paper towel method, coupled with the steady warmth from the heat mat, provides an effective and controlled way to germinate cannabis seeds. It's an excellent technique for both new and experienced home growers, setting the stage for healthy marijuana plants. Remember, the right conditions during the germination process lay the foundation for the growth and eventual yield of your cannabis plants.
